Beast Man

Mattel's big swing of 1982: chunky barbarians with a twist-and-release waist, so He-Man could throw a proper punch, each with its own mini-comic. The Filmation cartoon made it enormous in 1983, and new waves kept coming every year until 1988.
Complete checklist of 136 Vintage Masters of the Universe toys across 7 series by Mattel, 1982-1988. Updated 27 October 2026.

Where it all started: He-Man, Skeletor and the first crew with their punching waists, Battle Cat as the only creature, the Battle Ram, the Wind Raider and Castle Grayskull itself. Wun-Dar is the odd one out, a Wonder Bread mail-order He-Man that collectors still argue about.

This is where the gimmicks kicked in: Man-E-Faces switches between three faces, Tri-Klops turns his visor, Trap Jaw swaps arms and Ram Man charges head first. Evil-Lyn is Teela's mould in yellow, Panthor came with fuzzy flocked fur, and Screeech and Zoar flap their wings at the press of a trigger.

A packed year. Battle Armor He-Man and Skeletor show fresh slashes on their chests when hit, Mekaneck stretches his neck and Kobra Khan sprays mist, while Snake Mountain gave Skeletor a lair with a microphone that made your voice sound evil.

Hordak and the Evil Horde move in, with the Fright Zone as their base and Thunder Punch He-Man firing real caps from his backpack. Stinkor genuinely smelled, and Moss Man was flocked and scented too, so a sniff test is a fair way to spot an original.

The biggest year for new product. King Hiss brings in the Snake Men, the Horde get the Slime Pit for gunking up prisoners, and the huge Eternia playset is now one of the hardest vintage pieces to find boxed.

The last US wave and the strangest one. Gwildor, Blade and Saurod came from the live-action film, Scare Glow glows in the dark, the Sorceress and King Randor finally got figures, the ten Meteorbs turned from balls into animals and the Energy Zoids spun like tops.

Just two figures, sold only in Europe: Laser Power He-Man and Laser Light Skeletor, with a battery in the backpack lighting up the sword or staff. They are among the priciest vintage figures going, especially still on the card.
