Collecting, Redesigned

Throwbacks: The Toys You Forgot You Had

Somewhere in a loft there's a box with your name on it. Inside: a Boglin that has seen things, a Battle Beast with a rubbed-off chest, and a Ninja Turtle who lost his weapons in 1990 and never got over it.

These pages are the way back to it. Some you can tick your way through for a score, and others are just here to make you say "I had that!" out loud in public. Either way, expect a sudden urge to ring your mum about what happened to your He-Man.

Why We Built These

We grew up with these toys, and we never quite left them behind. Grayl started as checklists for collectors, and they're brilliant when you know what you're looking for. But nobody can search for a toy they've forgotten existed.

That's the bit we love: the moment you turn a corner, see Mighty Max or a Monster in My Pocket, and you're eight years old on a bedroom carpet again. So we picked the toys that do that to us, wrote something daft about each one, and left you to it.

If you get to the end and want the real things back, Grayl will keep track of the ones you've got and the ones that got away. If you just want to prove to your brother that you had the better childhood, that's fine too.

The 80s, Briefly

The decade of plastic muscle. He-Man flexed, ThunderCats roared and Transformers turned into anything with wheels. Zoids took over the kitchen table, Battle Beasts settled every argument with a rub sticker, and Madballs and Boglins made your parents question your choices. Dino-Riders strapped soldiers to dinosaurs, and The Real Ghostbusters put ghosts in your bedroom on purpose.

The 90s, Even More Briefly

The Ninja Turtles were on everything, then Power Rangers got every kid kicking the air in the playground. After that, anything could be a hero if it had attitude: Street Sharks, Biker Mice from Mars, Extreme Dinosaurs, and somehow Toxic Crusaders. Your pockets filled up with Monster in My Pocket, Mini Boglins and Mighty Max, and Small Soldiers closed it out.
